BERRY COLLEGE'S BENEFACTORS
Continuing the previous blog about Martha Berry and Berry College, this is a picture of the Ford buildings. Martha Berry had attended school in the North for a short time. It was there she made several contacts that would prove to help her in the building of her school.
Not only did Martha donate her own money and time
to the school, she used the eighty acres her father had
given her to start her new project. With every opportunity,
she bought and added acreage to the school's property.
Encouraging others to help the poor and uneducated, she
was fearless in her attempt to raise money for furthering
education and scheduled several speaking trips to rally
interest to help support the vision God had given her.
Henry Ford's Ford Company had built a Model T automobile
which resulted in a vast fortune. Henry Ford said, "I will build a car
for the great multitude. It will be large enough for the family, but
small enough for the individual to run and care for. It will be constructed
of the best materials, by the best men to be hired, after the simplest
designs that modern engineering can devise. But it will be low in price
that no man making a good salary will be unable to own one - and
enjoy with his family the blessing of hours of pleasure in God's
great open spaces." Ford was then able to help others by donating
money and charitable gifts.
Not only did Ford believe the great multitude should be able to drive
affordable cars, he believed they had a right to be educated. He
took an interest in Martha's endeavors and through several trips to
Mount Berry, he and his wife became friends and
supporters.
The Fords donated tractors for the agriculture department and funds for the magnificent gothic buildings that rose from the grass of previous cow pastures.
And true to Martha's wish to glorify God's name,
she had His Word engraved on every building or
written on the walls.
